The Col des Montets (1461m), route D1506, between the Chamonix valley in France and the Valais in Switzerland, is closed due to high risk of avalanche from 08:30hrs Saturday 15th December 2012 until further notice.
The rail tunnel under the Col is open for road traffic. The flow of traffic is controlled by traffic lights, with a change in direction every 10 minutes. The tunnel is easier to negotiate that in previous years, as the rail lines are temporarily taken up for major works. Construction will resume in the spring. The rail service is scheduled to resume in late 2013.
