Montenvers Mer de Glace site: New Renovation Project

After the recent works at Montenvers Mer de Glace site: the railway station, the restaurant and the Grand Hotel, the renovation work is not yet finished.

According to le Dauphine, a big new renovation project to restore the attractiveness of this site, is on the move.

This renovation project includes:

the creation of a new access, viable and sustainable, to the Mer de Glace, taking into account the glacial retreat: the current gondola to the Mer de Glace will be replaced and moved to face the glacial retreat problem;
the creation of an information center about the glaciers and the impact of the climate.

Financing of the renovation project of Montenvers Mer de Glace site

All the facilities and equipment require a €30 million investment.

The departmental council, the licensing authority of the railway, offers, as part of its Tourism Plan, an envelope of €6,5 million.

The regional council is called on to provide also his support. Indeed, in the «Grands sites d’intérêt régional», a list of around fifteen sites, is included also Montenvers. Therefore at the last municipal council of 24th August 2017, the elected representatives adopted a request for regional financing of €1,5 million.
