Weather alert for Haute-Savoie
Meteo-France in Lyon has issued, Monday 21 November 2016, an orange weather alert warning of violent winds for the Savoie and Haute-Savoie, through-out the day.
Powerful autumn storm-force winds expected, requiring special vigilance. These strong winds can cause damage to property.
The end of this weather alert is scheduled Tuesday 22 November 2016, at 9 p.m.
According to Meteo-France, Lyon, the winds may reach up to 150 km/h in the high mountains, 110 to 120 km/h above 1000m of altitude. Also, in the high alpine valleys, the winds may reach up to 70 to 80 km/h.
The force of the wind will increase in the upcoming hours until late evening. The *Foehn is expected to effect the Chamonix Valley later in the day, but no ETA was provided by France Meteo.
*A föhn or foehn is a type of dry, warm, down-slope effect that occurs in the lee (downwind side) of a mountain range.
Possible consequences and outcomes, indicated by Meteo-France:
- Power & telephone lines may come down. Outages can be prolonged;
- Roofs and chimneys may be damaged;
- Tree branches may break. Vehicles can be hit or impeded;
- Road traffic can be interrupted, especially on the secondary network, in forest areas;
- The operation of ski resort infrastructure may be interrupted.
Advice on behavior:
- Limit your travel.
- Limit your speed on roads and highways.
- Do not walk in the forest.
- In town, be alert to possible fall of objects from building.
- Do not attempt to access roof-tops to make repairs.
- Do not touch any electricity cables that have fallen. They may be live.
The Foehn is expected in Chamonix valley, if you travelling out of the valley, be aware of these strong winds forecast for today in South-Est France.
