Chamonix: a 73-year-old skier died by hitting a tree

On Monday 6 March 2023, a 73-year-old French skier who was not wearing a helmet lost his life hitting a tree in the Grands Montets ski area.

The accident occurred just above the Lognan, somewhere between the Herse chairlift and the Bochard gondola, in a spot with a few spruce trees.

Alerted by the trackers and quickly dispatched to the scene thanks to the Dragon 74 civil security helicopter, the Chamonix (PGHM) rescuers could only confirm the death of the man.

Last day of school holidays: several rescue operations for the PGHM

Friday 3 March 2023, a busy day for the Chamonix PGHM, the gendarmes carried out the following rescue operations:

  • at the Grandes Jorasses and at the Aiguille Verte in the Couturier corridor, to evacuate a few blocked mountaineers;
  • in the Vallée Blanche, an intervention for an ankle injury;
  • in the Contamines-Montjoie area, an intervention for a head trauma of a 15-year-old boy who lost consciousness;
  • at Brévent, an intervention for a cervical trauma of a 62-year-old skier;
  • in Saint-Gervais the helicopter helped to evacuate a person who began to feel unwell;
  • in Chamonix, an intervention for a cross-country skier who injured his knee, in the Balme area, precisely in the Grandes Autannes.

All the injured people were taken to Sallanches hospital.
